Four hydride mini-fuel rods are being fabricated to be irradiated in the MIT reactor under typical LWR conditions. The fuel pellets are fabricated from TRIG A fuel that consists of uranium-zirconium hydride (U_0.17ZrH_1.6). Each mini-fuel rod consists of five pellets clad in Zircaloy. The gap between the fuel and cladding is filled with helium gas for one of the mini-fuel rods and with a eutectic lead-bismuth alloy for the rest of the specimens. Mini-fuel rods will be extracted from the MIT reactor core at different intervals, with the longest specimen staying inside the core for a duration of one year.
