This paper presents the results of a real-timernsoftware L1-frequency GPS receiver. This workrndemonstrates it is possible to take raw intermediaternfrequency (IF) GPS samples directly into a modern PCrnand process those samples exclusively on a programmablernmicroprocessor. All processing from the computationallyrnexpensive correlation to position solution specificrnalgorithms are implemented in software using ANSI C.rnA software approach provides maximumrnflexibility in the design. Moore?s law states that computerrnpower grows exponentially. This implies that high-endrnmulti-channel designs of software radio GlobalrnNavigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers will bernpossible on a low-end general purpose processor or arnsingle low cost Digital Signal Processor (DSP) chip.rnThe work presented here is a scalable andrnflexible GPS Software Receiver (gpSrx) that providesrnsub-second acquisition and solves for position in real-timernusing four channels on a 650MHz x86 compatiblernprocessor which today cost less than $100.
