Transurethral microwave heating without urethral cooling: theory and experimental results

Abstract: Transurethral microwave hyperthermia is emerging as an important treatment modality in the management of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The existing transurethral applicators are easy to operate and some have been designed to be disposable. Heating patterns measured in the laboratory and clinically are similar. There is a predictable temperature distribution clinically useful in the immediate periurethral prostate. Results of preclinical studies have been presented.!
