Abstract: The effects of contact tip, pulsed Nd:YAG ablation of dentin were studied with scanning electron microscopy. Both the fiber tip and the ablation crater were examined. During the ablation process the fiber tip changes shape, loses transmission and melted silica is found at the bottom of the ablation crater. A thin layer of melted dentin covers the crater surfaces. A preliminary model is presented of the morphological alterations and of the many, interacting photophysical process that occur. !0
