Welding with Nd:YAG-lasers has in comparison to using CO_2-lasers favorable effects on process stability and process efficiency due to the shorter wavelength. In addition, the application of several focus spots arranged closely to each other offers further advantages concerning available laser power, process stability and quality, as well as flexibility and efficiency. Based on the multi-fiber technique, multiple focus spots are easy to realize. The increase of laser power available at the workpiece can be converted in a higher penetration depth or higher feeding rate. The more stable keyhole geometry achieved by the multiple focus is resulting in a more stable process behavior, so that the appearence of process pores and blow holes can be avoided, which is of particular interest for aluminum welding. The possibility of designing a task-adapted intensity distribution opens possibilities for the bridging of gaps and the shaping of the weld seam geometry. This contribution will discuss the innovative joining process and present the large potential that, in particular, can be exploited with diode-pumped-solid-state lasers of highest beam quality.
