The application of laser beam welding within an industrial scope requires parameter close to the task to be performed. Nowadays this is carried out mainly by preliminary investigations with limited generality. The process is influenced by approximately 150 different parameters of direct or indirect action and of systematic or stochastic nature. A purely physical approach is not sufficient in order to reveal the dependencies occurring under manufacturing conditions. This motivates the application of well established methods for failure analysis. Interviews of experts led to a basic estimation of the relevance of parameters and hence, to their reduction by number. Based on experiments a failure mode and effect analysis was carried out in order to analyze the effects of parameter shifts regarding the quality standard DIN EN ISO 13919-1. From the results a house of quality was established which covers the complete manufacturing process. Under the knowledge of the most relevant parameters guiding the laser beam welding process measures and devices for quality planning and control were developed and applied.
