When considering the solution of a given control problem, one is usually interested in the corresponding stabilization or pole-placement facilities. However, simply due to the considered control problem (e.g. decoupling control, disturbance decoupling control, decentralized control, combination of such goals,...), some poles of the closed-loop system are usually "fixed". Their knowledge is crucial, mainly for checking the existence of at least one (internally) stabilizing solution. In many situations these poles can be characterized as some particular "zeros". The aim of this paper is to review and to unify the various structural characterizations of fixed poles in terms of the so-called "invariant zeros".
