This paper provides the background for a new research program that is being developed to gather gear dynamics and noise data from a variety of gearing applications. The data will be used for the guidance of dynamic model development for the prediction of noise emanating from gearboxes. Readers should treat this paper as a “work in progress” since the authors are in the process of applying the methods presented here to many gearing applications.The example gearbox of this paper is an aircraft idler gearbox that is run at light loads with a limited set of noise and vibration data being taken during speed run-ups. Vold-Kalman filtering is used to create unique analysis displays of the transient gear run-ups and comparisons are made with a finite-element based idler gear/shafting dynamic model. A simple frequency response based dynamic model is developed to predict radiated noise.
