Product data management (PDM) has been accepted as an important tool for thernmanufacturing industries. More and more researches have been conducted in its development, such asrnsystem design, integration of object-oriented technology, data distribution, collaborative and distributedrnmanufacturing working environment, security, and web-based integration. However, they cannot caterrnfor PDM in distributed manufacturing environment. Moreover, development of PDM/distributed PDMrn(DPDM) system is inherently complex and enterprise-dependent. In system design, development andrnimplementation, a formal neutral specification is necessary and desirable for later mapping to arncommercial tool. The paper first depicts the complex control dynamics for both PDM and DPDMrnsystems with graphical models. Statecharts are then constructed to express the various scenarios ofrninteractions between users and the PDM/DPDM system. It is found that the expressive power ofrnstatechart in modelling hierarchy, concurrency, history, and timing behaviors bridges the current gaprnbetween requirements, scenarios, and the initial design specifications of PDM/DPDM system.
