Research on the cutting performance of carbon nitride cutting tools

摘要

A new kind of superhard material - C_3N_4 has been developed in recent years. C_3N_4 film is depositedrnon the surface of cutting tools by dc active magnetron-sputtering method. It has ultrahigh hardness whichrnapproaches that of diamond.rnHigh speed steel (HSS) twist drill coated with C_3N_4 film is applied to drilling hole process on steelrnworkpiece in cutting tests, the tool life is increased greatly. When the C_3N_4 film is coated on cemented carbiderninserts, the cutting performance is improved, but is not good enough. When C_3N_4 coated cemented carbide toolrnis used in machining particle reinforced composite material (PRCM), the cutting performance is almost as poorrnas machining with uncoated tool. The data of mechanical property and cutting tests about this kind of newrncoated cutting tool is given in this paper, it shows that C_3N_4 has a promising future.
