The fundamental experiments of the hydrothermal gasification of palm oil mill effluent were investigated in continuously operated tubular reactor made of stainless steel. The Ni catalyst and activated carbon catalyst were used for the gasification. Experiments were performed at two conditions, the pressure of 20 MPa and the temperature of 350℃ for Ni catalyst and 35MPa and 550℃ for activated carbon catalyst. The main components of the product gas were methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide and its balance deeply depends on the reaction temperature. The efficiency of the gasification was ca. 80%. The liquid product after gasification showed only BOD of ca. 10 mg/L, which is enough to satisfy the local effluent standard of the wastewater in Malaysia.
