Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are strong candidates as building blocks for self-assembly, with their optical and electronic properties associated with applications ranging from medical therapeutics and diagnostics to opticaldevices. The colloidal syntheses of AuNPs with desired size and shape have been established, their directed assembly into complex three-dimensional superstructures still remains as a challenge theme. This challenge can be met by engineering nanoparticle surfaces with a layer of molecular ligands that determine interactions between neighboring nanoparticles or between nanoparticle and the surrounding solvent. In this presentation, heterogenous coating to prepare amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles (Fig. 1) and homogeneous coating of semi-fluorinated surface ligand for nanoparticle vesicles were presented for controllable self-assembly.
