The 1060 MW Pumped Storage Project Goldisthal of the private energy utility 'Vereinigte Energiewerke Aktiengesellschaft' (VEAG) in the southern Thuringian Forests in Germany is currently under construction. The major rock engineering structures are: one powerhouse cavern (PHC) (25.8m width, 48.5m height, 137.4m length), one transformer cavern (15m width, 17m heigth, 122.2m length), access tunnel (diameter 7m), inclined pressure tunnels (diameter 7m) and tailrace tunnels (diameter 9.6m). The excavation of the PHC in quarzites and slates was safely and successfully completed by April 2000. Both thorough investigations and close monitoring/mapping were essential for the safe and economic design and construction of the PHC. Next to the rock mass conditions the excavation sequence had an effect on the measured deformations and thus on the installed rock support. The issues of the possibility to react flexibly to changing rock mass conditions/behavior and to direct the excavation sequence should be covered in the contract documents.
