PROMOTING SOLAR WATER HEATING AND OTHER RENEWABLES IN PORTUGAL

This paper describes the work under development in Portugal for the promotion of solar water heating in the framework of the Program “Solar Hot Water for Portugal” , which envisages to revert the actual situation of the very weak solar collectors market, to a developed one with the goal of attaining 1 million square meters by the year 2010. This represents to increase by a factor of 30 the annual solar collector market and implies a series of actions and measures, involving several energy related institutions in Portugal, acting together to increase the consumer confidence on the technology and to facilitate the initial investment. The Portuguese Solar Industry is participating offering long-term (6 years or more) complete warranties to users, complemented with 1. incentives and fiscal measures, 2. solar hot water selling service,3. promotion of the solar image by using certified products and qualified installers. Technical information to the different types of users will also be provided and a Solar Observatory will follow the program results and will get relevant data to feed the statistics on this field.
