The idea program at EES Coke Battery LLC is the life blood of the company; it gives any employee the opportunity to improve any of the processes that we do. This idea that I had was as simple as knowing the difficulties that the operators go through on a daily basis and trying to make their jobs just a little better. The old helium laser, along with the spot up plate on the buckstay just wasn't cutting it. I knew I had to do something that would help them spot on an oven door, that's when the camera alignment came into play. As soon as the pusher machine was complete the Door Machine and Charge Car operators started to ask when theirs was going to be installed, they all liked it that much. As the last machine was being finished, it was a great honor for me to sit back and see the enjoyment of the operators as they used the new equipment. Along with their approval came benefits that were not really thought of when I was going through the process of design and installation. The pusher and door machine operators can see the bottom latch of the door and tell if it is locked before the door extractor is retracted all the way, we can also catch problems on the door extractor way before maintenance would even look in that direction. The process also helps in the environmental aspect of things, with the ability to extract an oven door from the center all the time you will save on knife edge repairs. As far as the charge car is concerned, with the telescopes going in the charging holes straight all the time you will reduce on the raw coke oven gas emissions during each charge. Over all the new system saves the company time and money, along with helping the operators train on the machines faster.
