Higher levels of dietary sodium and lower levels of dietary potassium are associated with higher blood pressure (BP). Low sodium, high potassium salt substitute had been in the market for years with a vision to be beneficial to the user's health. There are, however, few scientific evidences on the effect of this dietary intervention on blood pressure and its acceptability among population. The effect of salt substitute on lowering peripheral blood pressure The China Salt Substitute Study-1 was a randomised, controlled trial designed to establish the long-term effects of a low-sodium, high-potassium salt substitute (68% sodium chloride, 22% potassium chloride, 10% magnesium sulphate) compared to normal salt (99% sodium chloride) on BP among cardiovascular high-risk individuals resident in rural northern China. Individuals from 6 sites were assigned at random in a double blind design to replace their usual household salt supply with either study salt substitute or study usual salt for a 12 month period.
