This study found that a two-stage compression, cooling and separation product recovery train without and with expansion and recycle can handle a wide range of flue gases from an oxy-fuel unit. The technology is capable of producing a CO_2 product stream with a purity greater than 95% ready for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and coal bed methane (CBM) applications. The CO_2 recovery rate is very sensitive to the flue gas properties and operating conditions of PRT. At the selected operating conditions, the PRT has a very good tolerance for incoming flue gas impurity levels. A refrigeration system is necessary in order to have a high CO_2 recovery rate. Impurity studies indicated that a PRT process utilizing a refrigeration system has much higher stability toward flue gas impurity levels. A PRT with expansion and recycle does not provide noticeable advantages in terms of recovery rate when a refrigeration system is used for second stage cooling.
