Introduction Natural fibres, a renewable resource have recently become attractive components for composites due to their high performance and non-abrasiveness to processing machines, it is commonly believed that most properties of a composite material are determined by the interracial adhesion between fibres and the matrix. To obtain good interfacial adhesion between fibres and polymer matrix, some research has been carried out on the chemical modification of natural fibres. The objective of this study is to characterize untreated and alkali-treated flax and hemp fibres to be used as reinforcements in producing high strength, low density wood composite panels.
