Treatment of Domestic Sewage by ABR Reactor with an Aerobic Biofilter

In this paper the removal efficiency of COD, the influencing factors and the phenomena of different chambers in the ABR to treat domestic sewage were analyzed. The effluent concentration of COD can meet the second order of Comprehensive Sewage Discharge Standard (GB8978-1996) and was close to the first order. The second chamber and the third chamber of ABR had a crucial role for treating domestic sewage, except the first one. The removal efficiencies were satisfactory when a hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 6-10 h at about 18 ℃, which were better than those of UASB reactor. It represented the advantages of the tertiary anaerobic reactor, and showed enormous potential and wide foreground for treating organic contamination by ABR reactor. The effluence from ABR should be post-treated by an aerobic biofilter. All of the indexes can meet the first order of discharge standard except phosphate and total organic phosphor (TP). The study accounted for good adaptability of ABR combined an aerobic biofilter to treat domestic sewage.
