The commercially available TBP is beset with problems like sedimentation on long-standing, slow phase disengagement in solvent extraction process and relatively poor radiolytic stability. Consequences of these have been low output, loss of TBP in the effluent and requirement of frequent make-up. Extensive experimental and theoretical studies on different aspects of TBP synthesis has resulted in the development of a process route that not only gives better yield and high purity product but also overcome most of the problems associated with commercially available TBP. Some of the salient features of the process include the use of indigenously available raw materials, fewer unit operations, high yield (>92 %) and purity (99.8%). A 200 Kg batch capacity plant based on this technology is under advance stage of implementation at Heavy Water Board, Talcher, Orissa.
