NF1, a sulfated polysaccharide, was isolated from NF1 bacteria and modified with sulfuric acid. The molecule was found to inhibit HIV-1 infection in vitro assays and may have the potential as an anti-viral agent. In the current study, cytotoxicity of NF1 was investigated with MTT method on ghost cells and its anti-HIV-1 activity was analyzed with pseudovirus infection assay. Our results showed that it had low cytotoxicity, with CC50 for ghost cells at about 760 μg/mL. The 50% HIV-1 inhibitory activity (EC50) of NF1 was no more than 4. 67 μg/mL. Based upon our observations, we concluded that NF1 was a low toxic, HIV-1 inhibitory molecule and deserved further studies for its anti-viral activities.
