Giant Irradiation Effects in FCC Nanocrystalline Metals

Irradiation effects on elasticity properties of nanocrystalline (n-) Au and n-Cu were studied. The internal friction observed between 6 and 300 K remained almost unchanged by irradiation below 40 K and successive warm-up to 300 K. On the other hand, the Young's modulus at 6 K showed a considerable increase which tended towards saturation in the Frenkel-pair concentration range of 10~(-4). The increase in the Young's modulus almost diminished after warm-up to 300 K. The present work demonstrated that properties of grain boundary regions in FCC n-metals can be modified by irradiation and n-metals are a potential material for high irradiation tolerance.
