Landslide hazard map in an area of Camaragibe city, Pernambuco, Brazil

To help the physical and environmental planning of the Camaragibe-city, the potential for landslide hazard of its occupied hills was evaluated. This work is the result of an agreement between the Federal University of Pernambuco and the local government of Camaragibe, which aims at contributing for the headmaster plan of the city. Camaragibe-city is in the Metropolitan Area of Recife. The hazard degree was evaluated using the methodology by Gusmao Filho et al. (1992), adjusted to accommodate to the surroundings and to the technical requirements by the Ministry of the Cities. The results turned out a hierarchization of hazard sectors in four degrees: low, medium, high and very high. Despite the large use of term "risk" in similar studies in Brazil, the authors thought better to adopt the term "hazard" in order to express their results, since a vulnerability analysis had not been carried out in the area studied.
