An ultrasonic vibration device and a tube-shell heat exchanger model have been designed to investigate the heat transfer performance and pressure drop of several smooth and corrugated tubes with and without ultrasonic power. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger increases obviously while the pressure drop of the flow decreases dramatically for both smooth and corrugated tubes with the inside fluid exposed to ultrasonic vibration. Most importantly, with the effect of ultrasonic vibration, the corrugated tubes present much better heat transfer enhancement performance than the smooth tubes. They have higher heat transfer coefficient and reduced pressure drop that is similar with the pressure drop in the smooth tubes without ultrasound. The investigation provides basis for the application of compound heat transfer enhancement of corrugated tubes and ultrasonic vibration in tube-shell heat exchangers.
