The solid-state reaction of fullerene C_(60) under the high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) conditions afforded new dimeric fullerenes such as the one connected by a silicon bridge and a single bond and also those incorporated in bicyclic frameworks. On the other hand, thermal reactions of C_(60) with nitrogen-containing aromatics in solution gave various derivatives of open-caged fullerenes. The latter reactions are supposed to proceed via [4+2] cycloaddition followed by nitrogen extrusion and a series of intramolecular rearrangements. The orifice of these compounds was enlarged by photochemical reaction with singlet oxygen. The electrochemical behaviors of these dimeric as well as open-cage fullerenes were also examined.
