Single bonded dimeres of fullerenes and fullerene derivatives

Raman spectra, optical absorption and thermal stability of the two single bonded fullerene dimeres (C_59N)_2 and (C_60~-)_2 were studied for excitation with lasers between deep blue and near infrared. Optical absorption for (C_59N)_2 was found to be similar to C-60 but slightly downshifted. The Raman spectra and the resonance behavior of the two compounds wre very similar which is taken as a confirmation for the isoelectronic characer of the latter. Splitting of modes from the reduction of the the symmetry was only observed for the raial modes. The thermal stability of the diazafullerene was unexpected high whereas the stability of the intercalation doped dimer was very low. Approxiamte values are 650 K for the former and 260 K for the latter.
