A thickness shear mode (TSM) bulk acoustic wave (BAW) sensor for monitoring ammonium in water is developed through measurements of the electrical property changes caused by ammonium. The sensing electrode of the sensor is very small compared with the conventional TSM resonator allowing significant penetration of the TSM electric field into the liquid. It is shown that the sensor is capable of detecting ammonium in water in the concentration range where the ammonia toxicity in aquaculture systems becomes problematic.
