We have developed several methods for depositing electrodes on plastic microfluidic chips and examined their application to electrochemical detection, on-chip heating, and for driving electrophoretic separations. Electrodes on plastic chips were prepared by physical vapor deposition of metals, by electroless deposition, and by patterning of conductive inks. Patterned electrodes on plastic chips are robust and compatible with bioassay processes including various enzymatic reactions and DNA manipulations. On-chip electrode heaters respond quickly to power changes and are relatively efficient compared to separate heaters. Integrated electrodes result in similar or somewhat better performance than do non-integrated platinum wires for separations following heterogeneous enzymatic assays, as well as for DNA sequencing.
