ADVANCES IN OPERATIONAL SAFETY: ARE THEY PROVING EFFECTIVE?

The paper reviews the current nuclear power situation and discusses programmes to enhance operational safety, including the activities of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), specifically its Event Reporting programme, operator to operator exchange visits, workshops, performance indicators, peer reviews, good practices and special projects. Trends in operational safety parameters are discussed. The paper concludes by considering the future of nuclear power, the need for international co-operation, the need for operators to learn from each other and to maintain or even enhance standards of operational safety.
