CURRENT MULTIPLYING RECTIFIERS FOR HIGH OUTPUT CURRENTS

Current multiplying rectifiers are the voltage-current 'dual' of the much better known (and more widely utilized) voltage multiplying rectifiers. Whereas voltage multipliers provide an output voltage higher than a transformer's secondary voltage, current multipliers generate a dc output current correspondingly higher than the transformer's secondary current. This transformation will be illustrated with the conversion of the classical full wave voltage doubler into the current multiplying dual, and a range of full and half-wave current multipliers will be presented. It will also be shown that half-wave current multiplying rectifiers can be adapted to transformerless buck regulators of high step-down ratio. The basic circuit consists of a 'totem pole' of two input switches, as used in synchronous buck regulators, with a current multiplying rectifier driven from the midpoint connection through a coupling capacitor.
