New power supply circuit topologies and various distributed bus voltages are being considered to advance the level of system power density and efficiency. Two-Stage cascaded converter topologies may be the most suitable for high-current, low-voltage outputs used in next-generation communication power systems. This paper looks at trade-offs of several cascaded topologies including ; current or voltage-fed, push-pull and bridge configurations. Details surrounding a new high-voltage PWM controller customized for use in cascaded DC/DC converters are discussed as well as a thermally enhanced packaging technology and a high-voltage IC process.
