In the past several years, on board power distribution and management has gone through several changes with distributed power using Intermediate Voltage Architecture (IBA) becoming a de-facto design approach for new on board power distribution. In such systems, single isolated Front End DC-DC converters (FEs) power multiple Point of Load Converters (POLs) interspersed across the circuit board. As voltage levels decreased and the number of voltages proliferated, the need to control and monitor the multitude of POL converters scattered across the circuit board, has spawned a multitude of discrete control and monitoring IC solutions. We will examine the various means of providing these control functions, what are the interface requirements of the POLs and how these funcions are integrated of into the FEs and the POLs.
