A hydroponic experiment was conducted in glasshouse to investigate the influences of P deficiency on proton release, nodule number, and root growth of N_2-fixing plants of soybean. Increasing P supply improved nodule formation from week 3. Nodule mass was affected more by P supply than nodule number, which, in turn, was affected more than plant growth. Phosphorus deficiency increased the ratio of root to shoot biomass at weeks 4-6, and increased root length per unit root weight at week 7. Unlike in many other species, P deficiency decreased proton release in soybean.
