Metabolic responses to Fe deficiency in soybean roots: are there different Strategy I mechanisms?

Iron deficiency responses were investigated in soybean plants. Several differences were found when comparing this Strategy I plant with other species with the same Strategy. The main differences found for soybean with respect to other Strategy I plants were: a minor capacity to acidify the external medium that was also reflected in a lower H~+-ATPase activity in roots; a drastically decreased activity of the phosphoenolpyravate carboxylase; in Fe-deficient soybean roots the vacuolar phosphate concentration is increased and pH decreased (the ~(31)P-NMR study). Apparently, in soybean the activation of the rhizosphere acidification and the related processes does not occur, or occurs only to a small degree.
