CARBON AND NITROGEN CYCLING IN A RESTORED NORTH GERMAN PEAT BOG BEFORE AND DURING THE HOT AND DRY SUMMER OF 2003

Maintaining a water table close to the surface is important for the successful restoration of peat bogs. The restoring bog "Pietzmoor" in northern Germany has experienced a pronounced drop in water table during the hot and dry summer of 2003. During this period, the bog experienced an elevated release of carbon and nitrogen as well as strong nitrification. Our results show that care must be taken to keep the water table close to the surface even under extreme climatic conditions.
