For the Spreewald wetland region a water quality model was developed based on the Dutch water quality model DUFLOW. For consideration of the water and matter storage and/or release of areas, water-balance input data were applied, simulated by the water balance model WBalMo Spreewald. Discharges and recharges of sub-areas were determined, which are to some extend covered by peat. Exchanging loads between surface water and groundwater have been generated. Water quality simulations were performed for critical hydrological situations, wet and dry years, as well as for a high input concentration of sulphate, which is expected in the next 35 years due to post-mining processes in the upland catchment of the Spree River. The range of the sulphate retention capability of the total wetland and of the peat sites in particular was estimated. The results underline the high retention effect of peatlands for sulphate, especially in dry years.
