Thermally cross-linkable formaldehyde free acrylic binders can be modified by adding emulsion polymers. The binder properties on nonwoven substrates can be adapted by varying the amount of emulsion polymer. The addition of emulsion polymers can improve the flexibility of the binder and enhance the wet strength (hydrophobicity) of films and bonded substrates. The extent of these effects depend on the individual composition of the emulsion polymer. Therefore, the blending of acrylic thermosetting resins with acrylic emulsion polymers allows the tayloring and fine-tuning of resin properties to meet the specific requirements in technical nonwovens and natural fiber composite applications.
