The accepted book definition of a nonwoven, or more recently - an engineered fabric, is a sheet or web structure made by bonding together fibers by mechanical, thermal or chemical means. This definition is purposely broad so as to reflect the many different ways that nonwoven fabrics are made throughout the world. The fibers or filaments can be laid down in a number of fashions. Techniques for fiber processing are covered in other sources in much more detail. Suffice it to say that the choice of the fiber type, how it is arranged or laid, choice of bonding method - in this case, chemically, and choice of application method can produce a variety of finished products covering most of the potential end uses available today. The list of uses continues to grow as the engineered fabrics of tomorrow are in development laboratories now.
