Simulating Pressure Drop of Bicomponent Air Filters

Pressure drop is one of the most important characteristics of a fibrous filter. While numerous analytical, numerical, and experimental published works are available for predicting the pressure drop of filters made up of fibers with a unimodal fiber diameter distribution, there are almost no easy-to-use expressions available for media with a bimodal fiber diameter distribution. In the present work, the pressure drop of bimodal fibrous filters is calculated by solving the air flow governing equations in a series of 3-D virtual geometries that mimic the microstructure of fibrous media. It was found that through-plane permeability of filter media increase by increasing the coarse fiber diameter or mass fraction of the coarse fibers while the SVF is kept constant.
