Some Regulations for Chemical Binders Processing Aids: APEO Formaldehyde

Environmental issues play an increasingly important role in consumer products. Nonwovensrnare subject to stringent examinations, particularly with regards to the chemicals used in theirrnmanufacture as they often come in contact with the skin or are in our houses and offices.rnIn this paper, we will review two chemicals which are under scrutiny, alkylphenol ethoxylatesrn(APEs) and formaldehyde.rnSeveral methods of testing formaldehyde will be described including free formaldehyde,rnmodeling emitted formaldehyde and formaldehyde remaining in finished products.rnWe will conclude by presenting examples of some new environmentally-friendly binders thatrnRohm and Haas as developed along with the formaldehyde data and their applicationrnproperties compared with conventional binders.
