Kenaf Development and Prospect in Indonesia

Indonesia consists of more than 13,000 islands. Islands Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Irian, and Java are among the five largest. Sixty percent Indonesian population lives on Java Island, which is also known for its highly fertile soils. As a consequence, most of agricultural plantation, particularly food crops are concentrated on Java Island. In the last decade, industrial and property businesses are also growing very rapidly in this area leading to the decline of agricultural lands. Fiber crops like kenaf, jute and roselle have been affected and pushed out of the mainstream of agricultural production by food crop like rice.
