Portable, Zero-Emisson Power Supply using PEFC-Type Fuel Cells

Two different concepts of small fuel cell power supplies are described. The fuel cell stacks have been built using 100 cm~2 MEAs from GORE. Both systems are intended for unhumidified operation at a temperature below 50 ℃. The stacks are built from 20 cells thus giving a nominal voltage of 12V. The units are controlled by a micro-controller. The systems are intended to supply electricity for outdoor activities (e.g. camping, boating etc.). Currently, the prototypes are equipped with a 2 liter metal-hydride-storage-cylinder containing 400 Nl of hydrogen. This allows o operate a 35 freezer tor approximately 2 days. One of the systems is capable to sustain a power output of 250 W while having the capability for peak power of more than 350 W for at least 15 minutes
