Cones of pine (Pinus roxburghii), an agricultural waste biomass after dehydration with sulphuric acid was evaluated for its efficiency in removing some basic dyes (Auramine-O, Methylene blue and Rhodamine-B) and metals (Copper(Ⅱ), Cadmium(Ⅱ) and Mercury(Ⅱ)) from aqueous solution. Preliminary studies have shown that the removal was faster with less time and less adsorbent dose required for maximum removal. Thermodynamic parameters obtained from the temperature studies revealed that the uptake process is endothermic and spontaneous. There was no significant influence on dye adsorption while changing the pH, whereas the adsorption capacity increased with increase in pH in the case of metal adsorption. Suitable desorbing agents were also tried to recover the adsorbed species and recycle the adsorbent.
