A series of engineering geological investigations were carried out for tunnel and cavern construction to be used for ammunition storage in the Bukit Timah Granite of Singapore. The studies included rock mass characterisation, in-situ stress measurement and hydro-geological investigation. Traditional drilling exploration and modern geophysical exploration were employed, including cross-hole seismic tomography, electric resistivity tomography and single borehole radar imaging. To effectively apply geological data in the design and construction, a geo-information system (GIS) was developed upon the data obtained from site and laboratory studies. Its 3-D geological model and hyperlink data structure make it possible to create geological section and to search for geological data quickly and accurately, which facilitates the design optimisation. This paper describes the geological characteristics in the granite, the geo-information system and its application in cavern construction.
