The landfill's sites used for long time for the disposal of waste, will after their closing produce for a long time gas and polluted liquid. A geotechnical and environmental monitoring will be necessary for a long time after the closure. The monitoring program has a specific goal: to generate a volume of data to detect impacts in relation to surrounding groundwater, surface water and air, providing information to enable decisions concerning the management of the site. In this paper, results of the leachate's monitoring of the Grata do Diabo (GD) Landfill are presented and discussed. Chemical and physical aspects are analyzed after a collecting first each fifteen days and then monthly. It has been possible to verify the biodegradation and provide actions to avoid environmental contamination. Results of leachate analysis from other landfills are also presented. The results obtained are compared with this other results and analysed considering the meteorological conditions. They enable us to complete and guarantee the results obtained in this study. The monitoring is a powerful tool which contributes to the generation of relevant data to a variety decision making levels. The results confirm the importance of the monitoring process of the leachate, so that economical and technical importance decision can be taken, avoiding contamination problems and helping in consistent engineering solutions for the treatment of the wastewater or leachate.
