The study investigates viability of sludge reuse and recovery by integrating the organic municipal solid waste with secondary sewage municipal sewage sludge using biomethanation process. The total solid content mixture was optimized with respect to maximization of biogas yield with continuous monotoring over several parameters. Optimum total solid content of 5% was found to yield 80 m~3 of biogas per tonne of mixture compared to 65 m~3 per tonne of solid waste obtained from the conventional digestion of municipal solid waste. It was estimated that 3.4 x 10~8 m~3 of biogas could be generated through ingrated biomethanation from the potential of 4.2 million tons of solid waste generated annually in India. The viability of the digested sludge for agricultural use as fertilizer was also investigated.
