Quality has been a vital topic in industrial research for a long time. Within the world's largest business association for industrial research, the Industrial Research Institute, quality has been a leading topic for more than a quarter-century.rnFor instance - when Philip B. Crosby addressed the Industrial Research Institute's Fall Meeting in 1981, he noted that most American companies still treated quality management as a matter of inspection and testing. Crosby asserted that 'rework' was a planned part of industrial life. He criticized managers for failing to realize that every single defect and error was brought about through some action, or lack of action, on their part, and urged his audience to discard their traditional notions of quality.
