In order to assess alloy steel weldments, many interacting processes have to be considered, like weld pool phenomena, heat and mass transfer, solidification, micro-structural changes in the heat affected zone, hydrogen diffusion and their effects on the mechanical properties, cracking as well as residual stresses and distortions. A survey of the current state of the art in the field of mathematical modelling of weldments will be given, and some exemplary case studies will be shown. The use of different methods, like fundamental metallurgical models, neural networks, cellular automata, finite element calculations are considered. Special emphasis will be laid on microstructural models for phase transformations in the HAZ of low-alloyed steels and carbon migration in dissimilar welds
