With more and more applications moving on to Internet, security has become a major cause of concern. The Web based applications need security services to protect data at rest as well as data in transit. Implementation of technology solutions for security services is based on cryptographic algorithms. There are various cryptographic algorithms available in the market from various vendors and selecting the most appropriate algorithm for an application has many subtle issues. This paper is a literature survey to analyze the strength and weaknesses of currently used cryptographic algorithms and focuses on recent advancements in the symmetric and asymmetric cryptosystems and their impact on existing secure applications.
