We performed a consistent comparison of state-of-the-art and advanced electricity and hydrogen production options from coal and natural gas with CO_2 capture, inspired by the large variation in cost and performance data encountered in literature. After literature review and data normalisation, promising technologies are analysed in a chain analysis in the Dutch context, including energy distribution to various markets. CO_2 mitigation costs of electricity production can be reduced significantly on the longer term by means of advanced IGCC, NGCC with improved post-combustion capture and advanced oxyfuel combustion concepts and SOFC gas turbine hybrids. However, no clear winner can be identified due to uncertainty in forecasted conversion efficiencies and especially costs. Hydrogen is less attractive for low-cost CO_2 mitigation, mainly due to high production and distribution costs in comparison to actual costs of natural gas, used as reference in this study. Changing fuel prices and fuel mixes for electricity generation might give better prospects for CO_2 capture at hydrogen production plants, especially for coal gasification.
